Biography
Heath Ledger (April 4, 1979 - January 22, 2008) was born in Perth, Australia. His father was a race car driver, and his mother was a French teacher. He began acting in school plays at age 10 and dropped out at 16 to focus on his acting career. After appearing in various Australian TV series, he moved to Hollywood in 1999. That same year, '10 Things I Hate About You' won American audiences' hearts. In 2001, 'A Knight's Tale' brought him action star status. However, Ledger wanted to go beyond handsome young man roles. In 2005, he took a big risk playing a gay cowboy in Ang Lee's 'Brokeback Mountain'. His relationship with partner Jake Gyllenhaal was a bold choice for its time, and Ledger earned his first Oscar nomination. The film became a milestone for LGBT representation. For 'The Dark Knight' (2008), he locked himself in a hotel room for months to research the Joker's psychology. His Joker became one of cinema history's most terrifying, chaotic, and memorable villains. This performance, which overshadowed Jack Nicholson's 1989 version, elevated superhero films to serious drama. Sadly, he never saw the film's premiere. On January 22, 2008, he died in his New York apartment from an accidental overdose of prescription medications. He was only 28. After his death, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Joker - becoming only the second actor after Peter Finch to win posthumously. His daughter Matilda Rose was only 2 years old when he died. Ledger's early death is considered one of cinema's greatest lost potentials.
