Sir Ian McKellen, born May 25, 1939, in England, is a British actor. He gained worldwide recognition for his roles as Gandalf in 'The Lord of the Rings' series and Magneto in the 'X-Men' series. Having worked for many years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, McKellen is one of Britain's most respected theater actors. He was knighted in 1991 and received the title of 'Sir'. He is also known as an LGBT rights advocate.
